Aerial firefighting has largely been the same for 70 years.  Same Equiptment, same tactics.  And those tactics carry with them some significant inherent limitations.  Sadly, many times those limitations lead to loss of life, loss of aircraft, and losses of property and economic impact that can top $100 billion in any given year.  

The limitations that lead to excessive damage and loss of lives:

• no nighttime aerial operations reduces available time to fight a fire by over 50%

• nighttime is when the fires are calmest and winds are generally lower making them easier to contain

• planes must fly 150' over drop zones for retardants / suppressants to work because of air shattering, winds, and heat

• fires often happen in canyons, near ridgelines or power lines, etc which are obviously dangerous to the aircraft and crew

• there is no real-time, remote tactical intelligence coming in from the fire line for commanders in the control center to 'see' the actual effectiveness of retardant / supressant drops
